2) "SONOMA" now joins
"CABERNET"
Boston Scientific Corporation
has announced the "Post-Market Approval Study of the
NextStent Carotid Stent System and the FilterWire EZ Embolic Protection
System." This "SONOMA" Post-Market
Approval study, a multi-center, U.S. surveillance registry, enrolled
the first of 1,650 patients on May 31, 2007. One hundred sites are
planned with scheduled closure of the registry in September 2009. The
study will confirm the safety of the NexStent Carotid Stent System and
FilterWire EZ Embolic Protection System used in daily clinical practice
for the approved indications.
To review a detailed overview of the
study as depicted below in a SMArt Trial Summary at MedIntelliBase.com, go to "SONOMA"
study.

Subbarao Myla, M.D., Medical Director of Cardiovascular Research and
Vascular Intervention, Hoag Heart and Vascular Institute, Hoag Memorial
Hospital Presbyterian Newport Beach, CA, the principal investigator for
SONOMA, enrolled the first patient. In the BSCI
press release issued June 1, Dr. Myla was quoted
as saying
"We are hopeful that the unique design and other features of the
NexStent Carotid Stent and FilterWire EZ Embolic Protection System will
facilitate a high procedure success rate and relatively low risk of
major disabling stroke or death in a cohort of patients with
symptomatic and asymptomatic carotid artery stenosis that are at high
risk for surgery." A 500-patient cohort will be included to allow an
independent core lab to review analyze patient success based on routine
duplex ultrasound evaluations.
The "CABERNET" Multi-center Trial
["Carotid Artery Revascularization Using the Boston
Scientific EPI FilterWiRe EX and the Endotex NExStenT"]
results supported the FDA’s October 27, 2006 PMA approval of
both devices. Published September 23, 2005, the CABERNET trail was
designed for 600 patients and concluded with 454 patients enrolled,
with 438 showing a stroke rate of 1.3 percent, and a combined stroke,
death, and MI rate of 3.9 percent. To review the final trial results in a SMArt Trial Summary at MedIntelliBase.com, go to "CABERNET".

5) Fun Fact of the Month
- Is a good "belly laugh" good for your heart?-
Dr. Michael Miller of the University of Maryland School of Medicine in
Baltimore and colleagues have demonstrated
for the first time that laughter is linked to healthy function of blood
vessels. Laughter appears to cause the tissue that forms the inner
lining of blood vessels, the endothelium, to dilate or expand in order
to increase blood flow. [www.unm.edu]
