Cardiovascular (CV) MIB MarketTrack Updates --

-- TYPHOON trial - Cypher sirolimus-eluting stent

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The TYPHOON (Trial to Assess the Use of the Cypher Stent in Acute Myocardial Infarction Treated with Angioplasty) trial compared the Cypher sirolimus-eluting stent with bare metal stents in the percutaneous treatment of AMI. The study randomized 357 patients to bare metal stents and 355 to Cypher stents throughout Europe and in Australia. A highly significant 49% decrease in TVF was observed favoring the Cypher stent, driven primarily by a reduction in TVR. Results from this study were announced at the ACC.06 meeting in Atlanta.
PASSION trial - TAXUS Express2 paclitaxel-eluting stent
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The PASSION (Paclitaxel Eluting Stent Versus Conventional Stent in ST-segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction) trial was designed to evaluate whether the TAXUS stent could reduce restenosis and repeat interventions in patients with acute STEMI (ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction). 620 patients were randomized to either a bare metal Express2 stent or to a TAXUS stent. No significant differences were observed in this study between the two stents, possibly due to a lower- than-expected rate of MACE in the bare metal control arm. Results from this study were announced at the ACC.06 meeting in Atlanta.

-- CAPTURE trial - Rx Acculink carotid stent & Rx Accunet EPS distal protection device

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The CAPTURE (Post- Approval Study of the Guidant Carotid Stent Systems and Embolic Protection Systems) trial is a 2-phase post approval study designed to collect data on the ACCULINK and ACCUNET systems when used under a variety of conditions. Results will be compared with those from the ARCHER (ACCULINK for Revascularization of Carotids in High Risk Patients) trial. The CAPTURE study is also purposed to determine safety and efficiency of the product when procedures are performed by physicians with varying experience levels. This trial is expected to be completed in 2008.
